The Ferris Wheel “Jupiter” at the Saarbrücken Christmas Market
The Ferris Wheel “Jupiter” at the Saarbrücken Christmas Market
When Saarbrücken lights up festively during the Advent season, one sight has by now become almost self-evident: the large ferris wheel “Jupiter,” rising in front of the impressive backdrop of the Staatstheater Saarbrücken. For several years, it has been a permanent feature of the Christmas Market and has quickly developed into one of the city’s most popular photographic motifs.
Between strings of lights, market stalls, and a distinctly wintry atmosphere, the ferris wheel introduces a deliberately modern accent—connecting the traditional Christmas market with an attraction that opens up sweeping views across the city.
The Location: Tbilisser Platz in Front of the State Theatre
The ferris wheel is erected at Tbilisser Platz, directly in front of the State Theatre and in close proximity to the River Saar. This location is by no means coincidental:
it offers sufficient space for construction and operation while simultaneously allowing an unobstructed panoramic view over the city centre, the riverbanks of the Saar, and Old Saarbrücken.
Especially in the evening hours, when the city centre is illuminated, a distinctive atmosphere emerges—a combination of architecture, light, and movement that many visitors deliberately seek out for a ride.

“Jupiter” – Technology, Height, and Operation
“Jupiter” is a mobile ferris wheel, designed specifically for temporary events such as Christmas markets. With a height of approximately 50 metres, it ranks among the larger transportable ferris wheels of its kind.
The enclosed gondolas allow operation even in winter temperatures. During the Christmas Market season, the ferris wheel is generally open daily and often remains in place until early January, extending beyond the official market period.
Part of Saarbrücken’s “Christmas City”
Traditionally, the Saarbrücken Christmas Market stretches from St. Johanner Markt along Bahnhofstraße towards the city centre. The ferris wheel enhances this setting with a strong visual presence: even from a distance, it becomes clear that the city is alive and active during Advent.
In official communications by the city administration, the ferris wheel is now regularly referred to as part of “Christmas City Saarbrücken”—a clear indication that it has evolved from a temporary fairground attraction into a fixed element of the city’s winter cityscape.

Outlook: Challenges Posed by Upcoming Construction Work
Looking ahead, however, it becomes apparent that the familiar location may not remain a given. The City of Saarbrücken has pointed out that the planned renovation of the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) could affect logistics and the use of the surrounding area.
In an official statement, the city explains that it is currently examining how the ferris wheel “Jupiter” can continue to be realised during the Christmas season—either at its current location or at an alternative site within the city centre. Concrete decisions will depend on the schedule and progress of the construction works.
It therefore remains uncertain whether visitors will experience the ferris wheel at exactly the same location in the coming years. What is clear, however, is that the city has recognised the high value of this attraction.
