The Kleine Tonhalle \u2013 A Student Classic with History<\/h2>

Anyone who studies in Saarbr\u00fccken quickly becomes familiar with the name of a local pub or restaurant: Die kleine Tonhalle (\u201cThe Little Tonhalle\u201d).\nBut it isn\u2019t the historical background that draws diligent students there \u2014 it\u2019s the legendary, generously sized portions of spaghetti bolognese available for a very fair price.<\/p>

Few, however, ever stop to wonder where the name Kleine Tonhalle comes from. Most are unaware that it pays homage to the original \u201cTonhalle\u201d, a large venue in Saarbr\u00fccken that stood directly opposite the current site until its destruction during the Second World War. The original Tonhalle was described as a concert and social hall.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Memorable Evening of the Young Hermann Hesse<\/h2>

The original Tonhalle became the stage for one of the strangest evenings in the literary life of German Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse. On April 22, 1912, the young author had accepted an invitation from the Saarbr\u00fccken Association of W\u00fcrttembergers to give a reading from his works.<\/p>

For Hesse, the evening would remain unforgettable for several reasons. First, the modest audience that showed up had expected a humorist \u2014 a teller of jokes \u2014 and made no secret of their disappointment when they realized that was not the case. Second, Hesse\u2019s reading was repeatedly disrupted by the noise from the floor below, where a loud event described as \u201cBiermusik\u201d (beer music) was taking place \u2014 an event that, as it turned out, attracted far more attention from the people of Saarbr\u00fccken. [1]<\/p>

Hesse\u2019s Literary Response: \u201cDer Autoren-Abend\u201d (\u201cThe Author\u2019s Evening\u201d)<\/h2>

Hermann Hesse later transformed this highly unsuccessful evening, along with his encounters with the hosts and his stay at the home of the association\u2019s president Gottlob Fritz and his wife at Mainzer Stra\u00dfe 23, into a short story.<\/p>

The story, titled \u201cDer Autoren-Abend\u201d, was first published on July 23, 1914, in the Munich magazine Simplicissimus. Hesse, however, did not mention the actual names of people or places. Saarbr\u00fccken became \u201cQuerburg\u201d, and the Fritz family appeared under the name Schievelbein.<\/p>

Hesse made the connection explicit only decades later, in a letter written in 1953:<\/p>

\u201cThe little town was Saarbr\u00fccken, and it\u2019s all literally true \u2014 the bourgeois house with the golden chair and the parrot, the reading in the half-empty room above the giant hall with the beer concert, everything.\u201d [3]<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A Delightful Little Book About the Event<\/h2>

Edited by Ralph Schock, a small but thoroughly entertaining book about this anecdote was published in 2000 by Gollenstein Verlag. It is not particularly thick, but it is highly enjoyable \u2014 and warmly recommended to anyone interested in Hesse or Saarbr\u00fccken\u2019s cultural history. [1]<\/p>

The publication documents the circumstances of the reading, includes photographs of the author and the original Tonhalle, and reproduces the announcement and subsequent newspaper report from the Saarbr\u00fccker Zeitung.<\/p>

Naturally, it also contains Hesse\u2019s original short story \u201cDer Autoren-Abend\u201d, along with photos of his handwritten manuscript. In addition, the texts Hesse read that fateful evening are included.<\/p>
